‘s a Small World After All

Jul. 26, 2013—This summer I was lucky enough to go on vacation with my sister Jackie, in honor of her graduation. We went to Ios, Greece and had an awesome time! I hate the actual act of traveling, but I love visiting other places. I love experiencing the culture, eating the food, meeting new people, and making fun memories. After the trip, I thought about how enriching it was to travel somewhere else and grow as a person. These feeling reminded me of the excitement other students described when they studied abroad. The world is an enormous place, and Vanderbilt makes it possible for its students to experience nearly every facet of it...

Why Vanderbilt? Thoughts from a Graduating Senior.

Apr. 17, 2013—As the Class of 2017 will join Vanderbilt in the fall, the Class of 2013 will graduate and begin the next journey of their life. Instead of telling you why I chose Vanderbilt, which I have done many times (see previous blog posts) I thought I would give you the perspective of a student who is about to leave Vanderbilt.

Reminiscing about ASBreak

Mar. 28, 2013—This is a little overdue, but I promised I would write about my spring break experience! I was a little nervous before the trip as I was taking on a new role in the program as a site leader. However, I’m happy to say that my ASB experience this year was just as enjoyable as last year.

ASBasketball and Tutoring

Mar. 19, 2013—So as I posted before leaving, I spent my Spring Break on an Alternative Spring Break trip called Jungle Gym that went to Kansas City, MO.  There, we worked with the Niles Home for Children, a home and school for kids who have emotional trauma and psychological or behavioral disorders.  We slept on the floor...

’til ASB!

Feb. 28, 2013—On Saturday morning at 8 AM, I will be driving one of two minivans pulling away from Vandyland headed for Kansas City, MO for Spring Break.  While KCMO may not sound like the most exotic, or even exciting, Spring Break destination, it is actually going to be one of the best weeks of the year...

Habitat for Humanity Builds

Sep. 24, 2012—One of the student organizations I have become passionate about during my time at Vanderbilt is Habitat for Humanity. I went from being on the Junior Exec Board to becoming a fundraising chair and running the Commodore Trot 5k for two years, to finally becoming one of the co-presidents. It may not be your favorite...

The Best Things About Vandy

Sep. 13, 2012—After my first summer away from Vandy, I couldn't wait to get back by the time August rolled around. I spent the summer doing research in a lab at home, which was an incredible experience, but Western blots just don't compare to Nashvegas. So for my first ever blog, I thought I'd write about all of the wonderful things that I missed and love about Vanderbilt.

Spring Break in New Orleans

Apr. 10, 2012—It's that time of year again where I share what fabulous Spring Break option I decided on this year, about a solid month after I went. It should come as not much of a shock to you that this break I once again went on a missions trip with the Vanderbilt BCM. This year, the BCM went to New Orleans, a city I had never visited, so I was extra excited to go.

ASB “Hangin’ Around” in Kyle, South Dakota and Area

Mar. 23, 2012—*Co-authored by Samantha Orland* For Alternative Spring Break this year, we went to Kyle, South Dakota to live on the Pine Ridge reservation of the Lakota Sioux and to assist in a local elementary school. The 26.5 hour car ride definitely led to ASBonding, and the service made us feel like we could make a difference, even for just a week, in the lives of the children on the reservation.

ASB: “A Day in the Life” in San Juan, Texas

Mar. 20, 2012—This is a little blurb about one of my best spring break experiences in my life. I participated in an organization called Alternate Spring Break (ASB) where students travel to different sites domestically and abroad to engage in a week of service. This is definitely a longer blog, but it doesn't even cover HALF the things I wanted to say about this great organization. If you are interested in learning about a unique way to spend your spring break during your time at Vanderbilt (because you should come to Vandy!), then read on!
