Not an Ivy in the South

This is absolutely true! Vanderbilt can compete academically with the Ivy’s, even athletically. But that doesn’t mean VU belongs in the same category. Vanderbilt is unique, and has worked hard to be so. Classifying it as an Ivy takes away some of what makes Vandy special. Go Dores!

Interestingly, that first degree a woman (Kate Lupton) earned was a MA. In an article she wrote for the Vanderbilt Observer in 1888, she argued that men should support the enrollment of women because they would provide companionship for them.

Hmmm we live in Georgia and my daughter is a freshman at Vandy this year. I have found myself calling Vanderbilt an ivy of the south and have heard people describing it that way. I look at it as more of a compliment than a comparison.
