“I was terrified:” The Weeks Before Move-In Day
Jul. 27, 2016—“Guys?” I looked around the patio table outside the frozen yogurt place. My yogurt hadn’t melted yet; the terrible heat of June had left Dallas. It was August, two weeks away from Move-In Day. “What?” Kristin and Alicia looked at me between bites of their cones. “Is this just me… or are y’all scared for college too?” Kristin and Alicia, two of my best friends since fifth grade, looked at each other and then looked at me. “Oh my gosh, Sophie, we’re terrified.” And then all of us started laughing.

My First Year Classes
Apr. 20, 2016—The classes I took, what I thought of them, and how I think you (an incoming first year) should go about choosing your classes!
Dear High School Senior Sophie…
Mar. 8, 2016—Hey, dear. Now, take a few deep breaths and look up from that AP Physics C book for now. You’ll do well on the exam, I promise. We need to talk.
My (Real) Vanderbilt Experience: It’s a Success (Sort of)
Mar. 7, 2016—It’s 2:00 AM and I’m at Stevenson Library. On my right are five research papers, newly printed and stapled. On my left is my planner, covered in writing. My head’s buzzing with all the stuff I have to do and I’m trying to keep everything under control. And one thought above all: College is so much harder than I thought it was.
Something’s Changed: Coming Back to Vandy, January 2016
Mar. 7, 2016—After a changed flight number and an hour-and-a-half delay, I’m finally headed back to Vanderbilt!!! I’m so excited to go back and have a huge salad from the salad bar, or maybe a veggie burger with Tabasco, or maybe even a bowl of rice. Or actually, maybe everything. After all, I have five new flex meals… ;)
13 Things I’ve Learned from the First 18.75% of College
Mar. 7, 2016—I'm 18.75% done with college. EIGHTEEN POINT SEVENTY-FIVE PERCENT. Number one thing I've learned? Coffee is always necessary but only sometimes desirable.
The Happiest Student at Vanderbilt: Random Things I’ve Done at Vandy (Christmas Edition!)
Dec. 23, 2015—Thus ends the first semester of my freshman year. I was my high school valedictorian and I failed three tests. I’m so completely ungraceful that I opened a door once and fell over; I learned to swing dance. I would have described myself as an “introvert” before coming to college; I’ve discovered I LOVE people.
Just do… Everything!!! (Status of Everything: 12.5% Completed!)
Dec. 23, 2015—Two months ago I sat down in my advisor’s office and pulled up a word document entitled “The Grand Plan.” We both laughed a little as I showed her how I had planned out the next four years, study abroad and all. The Grand Plan involves an Applied Mathematics Major, a General Music Minor and...
The Final Final: Finals Week at Vandy!!!
Dec. 22, 2015—During a stay at Washington University at St. Louis for Multicultural Celebration Weekend, I stayed with six sophomores. As I walked around the dorm, one of them told me that her room reflected the state of her mind. During Finals week, she told me, she couldn’t even see her bed under all the clothes, papers, and books. Horrified, I swore that this would never be me.
